Stamp Information | : | ASAF ALI Asaf Ali was, along with such illustrious personalities as Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Dr. M.A. Ansari and Hakim Ajmal Khan, among the patrionic Indian Muslims prominent in public life, who rejected the concept of nationhood based on religion and thus helped in laying the foundation of the secular democratic Republic of India. Born on 11th May, 1888, Asaf Ali, who studied law in London, was a sucessful barrister. He gave up his practice during the first non-cooperation movement launched by Mahatma Gandhi in the early twenties. When he and Aruna Ganguly married in 1928, the event with its symbolic significant caused a stir and drew wide public notice. The last of the several spells of imprisonment which Asaf Ali courted during the freedom movement was in the wake of the 'Quit India' resolution adopted by the All India Cingress Committee in August 1942. He was detained at Ahmednagar Fort jail along with Jawaharlal Nehru and other members of the Congress Working Committee. On the formation of the Interim Govt. in August, 1946, Asaf Ali served as Railway Minister. One of his first actions in this capacity was abolition of the separate provision of drinking water on railway station platforms as Hindu Pani and Muslim Pani. Asaf Ali served subsequently as India's first Ambassador to U.S.A., Governor of Orissa and Ambassador to Swetzerland where he died on 2nd April, 1953. Asaf Ali's was a many-sided personality-- scholar, lawyer, nationalist, writer and connoisseur of music and te arts. Stamp Information | : | Sri Alluri Seetarama Raju is remembered as a great son of India in the annals of Indian History of the early period of the freedom struggle. Born on 4-7-1897, in a renowned kashtriya clan, he fought against the mighty British war-machine, leading tribesmen of Andhra Pradesh with old traditional war weaponry and sacrificed his life true to his clan in the battle field. While he was studying at Kakinada he got his political contact with Sri Madduri Annapurnayya, a great freedom-fighter, and Rallapalli Atchuta Ramayya, a great scholar. At the age of 15, Raju was shifted to Vishakhapatnam for his studies. Though he had little inclination for school studies, he was very keen and began to accuire knowledge of political situation in India. Sri Alluri Sitarama Raju went deep into Gond land where nearly a thousand tribals had sacrificed their lives during the first war of independence in 1857. He attended theA.I.C.C. session at Gaya in 1916 and at Kakinada in 1923 and got blessings of the top-ranking leaders of India. raju inspired and organised the tribals to wage war against the British, Soon Raju's plan of action took shape with vigour and quickness, on 22/8/1922. Raju's Army raided Chintapalli Police Station, on 23rd Krishnadevipeta Police Station, and on 24th Rajavommangi and captured a good number of guns, bayonets and cartridges and swords. He set free the revolutionary, Veerayya Dora from jail. The British Army got alerted and platoons of Police and Army were sent to capture Setarama Raju. At Peddavalassa, Raju attacked the British Army. They were defeated during this battle and suffered very heavy casualties and retreated. From hat day onwards there was a regular warfare between Raju and the Britishers. Raju came out triumphant in all. Virtually for two years from 1922 to 1924 Seetarama Raju ruled over vast agency area and became a terror to the British rulers. Later British rulers deployed big contigents of Assam Rifles and others. Fighting a fierece battle, Raju laid down his life and attained martyrdom. The Department of Posts is happy to issue a commemorative stamp on Sri Alluri Seetarama Raju in the seies 'India's struggle for freedom.' |

Stamp Information | : | NELLIE SENGUPTA JATINDRA MOHAN SENGUPTA Jatindra Mohan Sengupta Jatindra Mohan Sengupta was born at Burma, a village in Chittagong, now in Bangladesh. His father Jatra Mohan Sen was a leading lawyer and a member of the Bengal Legislative Council. Educated at Presidency College, Calcutta, Jatindra Mohan went to England in 1904, from where he took his degree in Law and was called to the Bar. He returned to India but gave up legal practice in 1921, when he became actively involved in the Non-Cooperation movement. Jatindra Mohan started his political career in 1911 as a delegate from Chittagong to the Bengal Provincial Conference at Faridpur. Thereafter he worked as Secretary of the Congress, Chairman of the Reception Committees and was elected to the Bengal Legislative Council in 1923. After the death of C. R. Das, he became, in 1925, President of Bengal Swaraj Party, leader of the Congress Party in the Bengal Legislative Council and President of the Bengal Provincial Congress Committee. He was one of the earlier leaders of the trade union movement as President of the Burma Oil Labour Union and of the Assam-Bengal Railway Union. He played a leading role in Municipal politics in Calcutta as the leader of the Congress Municipal Association and Mayor of the city, for as many as five terms. Jatindra Mohan organised relief in all natural calamities and worked for the cause of peace and harmony. Jatindra Mohan's many-sided contributions to the promotion of national consciousness were gratefully acknowledge by the people of Bengal who lovingly called him 'Deshpriya' (Beloved of the country). He suffered imprisonment for several terms and died as an internee at Ranchi on 23rd July, 1933. Nellie Sengupta An English woman earnestly serving the cause of Indians and their Freedom, dignified and unassuming, courageous and ever prepared to take risks and suffer privations, Nelli Sengupta naturally won love and esteem of all Indians. Daughter of Fredrick William and Edith Henrietta Gray, Nellie was born in 1886 at Cambridge, England. In 1909 she married Jatindra Mohan Sengupta, who was then studying in England and came to settle down in Chittagong. 1921 saw Jatindra Mohan Sengupta actively participating in the National Movement and Nellie wholeheartedly participated in the struggle. She protested against the orders of the District authorities and was arrested in 1931, for four months for addressing an awful assembly. In the early thirties Nelli was chosen to take over from Madan Mohan Malviya, at a time when most of the Congress leaders were in jail. The Calcutta Corporation elected her an Alderman and she was returned un-contested to the Bengal Legislative Assembly in 1940 and was re-elected in 1946. After partition she chose to live in Pakistan and was returned unopposed to the East Pakistan Legislature in 1954. Nellie Sengupta came to India for medical treatment and died in Calcutta in 1973. The Department of Posts is proud to issue this special stamp in honour of Deshpriya Jatindra Mohan Sengupta and Nellie Sengupta, amongst the foremost of our freedom fighters and nationalists. |
